An awning is a covering
that covers the outside wall of a building and is usually made of
canvas or acrylic cloth that has been stretched over steel, iron,
aluminum and sometimes wood. If you are a homeowner with a business
to run, the strategic use and design of a smart awning could be used
to advertise your business. On the other hand, if you are just
looking out for an aesthetic appeal to your patio and want to do it
yourself, as an economical measure or creative satisfaction, there
are kits available in rainbow colors and styles to meet a wide range
of budget and material choices.
Do it yourself awning tool guide
For all those that are handy with a drill, screwdriver and pliers,
there are manufacturers offering custom crafted, quality window
awnings and patio covering, which they can install themselves- an
economical bargain in terms of purchase and installation that
requires basic skills and tools. These awnings come with complete
installation instructions and in knockdown kit form. Some are
retractable and can be shipped truck freight. For fitting the awning
onto brick or concrete surface, the tools mainly required are a
power hammer drill and 14 mm masonry drill bit, Spirit level, a
Mallet, Chalk line, a tape measure, few ring spanners, two steady
step ladders and a stiff brush.
Basic steps for installing the awning and caring for it
There are four basic steps for fitting in the awning. The first step
is to un-pack the awning and set it before the window. Then the
fixing position is to be marked while keeping the ladder steady to
mount the brackets. The awning is to installed and any adjustments
made, if found necessary. Under windy conditions, these
pre-fabricated awnings can be retracted. The advantage of fitting in
a vinyl awning outweighs those made of other materials as these do
not leak, are less expensive for large canopy cover and can be used
for both commercial as well as residential purposes. When it comes
to repairing them, a homeowner can easily attend to vinyl awnings
with readily available products like Plastiseam, which mend the
edges if opened out.
Benefits of installing an awning on your own
You know best that where extra cover is needed and a good awning
affords waterproof and UV protection, which can be the most
strategically placed, if done by you. Doing it yourself ensures that
the awning is to your satisfaction and serves as a hand worked
effort that is an effective and energy-efficient device to keep your
home cool.
