Window dressing options are aplenty for all DIY
enthusiasts as there are many styles of curtains, shades, valances
and other window treatments that can be created easily by
homeowners, with little effort and minimal tailoring or crafting
skills.
How to choose window treatments
Those with a wide choice of fabric treatments in the room could do
well to select a complementary window treatment or use a matching
fabric. Simple fabric shades are a great way to tie in patterns and
colors and are easy to make too. The use of two of the same fabrics
already featured in the space, be it left over material or new
material, one option is to cut pieces from each one that are large
enough to cover the windows, ensuring that the cut fabric is a bit
larger to allow for taking in at the seams.
Making your own window treatments
Begin by laying out one of the fabric pieces face up with the other,
face down, ensuring the faces of the fabrics are together. Sew along
the top edges and both sides and invert the shades right side out
before stitching along the bottom edges to close them. Ribbons can
be pretty add-ons as hanging options instead of traditionally used
hooks or channel beads.
A dramatically different window treatment that can be achieved in a
matter of minutes is if you can hang a curtain rod and then
artistically drape scarves or lengths of luxuriant fabric over the
rods, to give it a tiered look and voila! a lovely, no-sew window
treatment is the attention grabber in your room.
Tab top curtains can be created for rooms where more privacy is
required. Heavy material is needed to construct these so that they
fall well and in-tune with the width of the window and the desired
length. Hem all sides to create a smooth edge and make the tabs by
simply cutting out strips of fabric about eight inches long by four
inches wide, folding them in thirds lengthwise and sewing the edge
down. For a neat finish, you may want to iron the tabs and ensure
that the sewn edge is not visible when attaching the end of the tabs
to the top of the curtains.
Simple joys of crafting a do it yourself window treatment
Those bereft of tailoring experience with minimal crafting skills
and loads of enthusiasm will find do it yourself window treatments
such as the one above, a fun and fulfilling creative activity and
when the compliments pour in, the joys of DIY window treatments are
doubled.
