How to Count the Costs of Home Improvements

When considering home improvements, the biggest factor of whether you will go ahead with them or not, is the cost. There is the cost of the material, but the cost of labor will be extra. Then there is the cost of the various permits you will need and the insurance. So how do you get a correct estimate of the cost that you will have to pay for your home improvements?

First, it’s important to buy the best value product you can get. If a roof needs to be replaced, it’s no use getting a cheap roofing material that will need replacing again in ten years, if you can afford one that will last for fifty years. Besides, the better one will add value to your home. Getting quotes is a good way to find out the cost of things, but many tradesmen will quote different prices. This may be because they will use a cheaper grade of materials. Ask them to quote using your choice of material. Many times a builder will be able to buy your choice of materials cheaper than you could, because he is entitled to a builders discount. Take advantage of this.

The most popular roofing is asphalt shingles that cost $50 -$150 per 100 sq ft. Metal roofing and concrete tiles start at $115 per sq ft and soars to $650. Ceramic tiles range from $275 to $500, while slate tiles top the lot at $1000 with special skill required to install them.

When costing, take into account every factor, e.g. cost of demolition and cartage. If you are replacing a roof, there will be a cost for the removal of the present one. There could be a cost for the delivery of the new material – unless you hire a contractor. In this case he will factor it all in his quote, including carting away the old stuff. You may be able to do some of these jobs yourself to save costs. You could buy a trailer big enough to carry what you need and then sell it afterwards, thus recouping some of the expenditure.

When getting quotes from tradesmen about the cost associated with your home improvements, make sure you choose those who offer a free quote. You don’t want to be hit with costs for three or four quotes before you even start.

When costing other materials such as siding and flooring, remember that there are different prices for different grades of the same product (quality). Also, it may not matter if you get a cheaper quality if the more expensive one is made for conditions such as snow and ice and your climate is temperate. Brands also vary considerably in cost. So when choosing windows and doors, be sure to look at the different brands.
